To celebrate 20 years of Dreaming Spires — the beloved giraffe sculptures that have become a defining symbol of Edinburgh — OMNi joined forces with Edinburgh Zoo, Scottish artist Helen Denerley, and St Mary’s RC Primary School to inspire the city’s next generation of creative thinkers.
The project, titled Sustainable Safari: Guardians of Tomorrow, invited P6 students to imagine a world where people and nature thrive together. Using OMNi’s iconic giraffes, Martha and Gilbert, as their muses, the children created more than 50 colourful, thoughtful designs filled with wildlife, clean energy, and vibrant community life.
Judged by OMNi’s Eilidh Parker and Helen Denerley, the winning artwork by student Nathan captured the spirit of the brief perfectly — featuring a giraffe and calf in motion, symbolising growth, connection, and optimism. Nathan’s artwork will be brought to life as an animated feature on OMNi’s new internal digital screen following the centre’s ongoing refurbishment.
As part of the celebration, students will visit Edinburgh Zoo to meet OMNi’s adopted giraffe and learn more about the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s conservation work.
This partnership reflects OMNi’s evolution into more than a leisure destination — it’s becoming a community hub, where creativity, sustainability, and education intersect.
